North Haven

North Haven

The village of North Haven is located a few miles north of Sag Harbor, on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by Noyack Bay, Sag Harbor Bay and the Peconic River. Much of North Haven is wooded, but there are also many waterside homes and estates with broad water views. The area was originally home to native Manhasset people, and the first European settlers arrived during the 1600s. They used the area to pasture livestock, and farming and fishing were the main occupations. In the late 1800s people began to travel to North Haven for vacations. Around the turn of the twentieth century a number of actors and actresses built houses here, and the neighborhood became known as the Actor’s Colony.

Today North Haven is quiet and residential, with no downtown, no shops or restaurants. It is known locally as the southern port of the South Ferry from Shelter Island, but there are a number of residential communities that keep a low profile. Landscapes in North Haven include woodlands, high bluffs, creeks and wetland meadows, and residents-only bay beaches. The waters are paradise for boaters. The area remains largely unspoiled and idyllic. It’s a place to get away from the world and enjoy privacy, though the restaurants, shops, cultural venues and historical sites of lively Sag Harbor Village are just minutes away.
